Binocular instability can be related to problems such as general health problems in adults, abnormal physical development in children, and undetected need to wear glasses in young children. These problems can cause double vision, headaches, eyestrain, and amblyopia, or squint.
As part of our eye examination, we look for binocular vision abnormalities, and may ask you to come back for further investigation via a binocular vision assessment. These binocular vision abnormalities are managed in various ways, such as spectacles, prism relief, and eye exercises, and can involve referral to an ‘Orthoptist’ who specializes in this type of vision therapy. These services are all available via the NHS.Our OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) instrument has the ability to allow the early detection of many ocular conditions including glaucoma and macula degeneration.
It is able to capture images of very high resolution and the accompanying software has manipulation properties that provide enhanced visibility of pathology, and the ability to measure structures for future comparison. The imaging system is used for routine eye examination screening, glaucoma monitoring, diabetic eye screening and monitoring of other abnormalities.
We offer retinal photography free of charge to all our patients as part of their eye examination. OCT technology can be undertaken in addition to this for a small fee which covers the cost of maintaining this instrument and storage of this information from one visit to another.
At Angus Optix, we understand the importance of maintaining good eye health from a young age. Children's eye care is essential for ensuring their vision develops correctly and for identifying any issues early on. Our friendly and experienced team is dedicated to providing comprehensive and gentle eye care for children of all ages.
Why Children's Eye Care is Important
Early eye examinations are crucial for detecting vision problems that can affect a child's development, learning, and overall quality of life. Many eye conditions, if caught early, can be effectively managed or corrected, helping your child to achieve their full potential both in and out of the classroom.
When to Schedule an Eye Exam
It is recommended that children have their first eye exam at six months old, followed by another exam at three years old, and then before starting school. Regular check-ups should continue every two years unless otherwise advised by an optometrist. If you notice any signs of vision problems, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment sooner.
Common Childhood Eye Conditions
Some common eye conditions in children include:
-
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye): Reduced vision in one eye due to abnormal visual development. Early treatment with glasses, patches, or eye drops can improve vision.
-
Strabismus (Crossed Eyes): Misalignment of the eyes, where one eye may turn in, out, up, or down. Treatment options include glasses, eye exercises, or surgery.
-
Refractive Errors: Conditions like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism can affect a child’s vision. These are commonly corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
-
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Inflammation of the conjunctiva, often caused by infections or allergies. Treatment depends on the cause and may include medications and good hygiene practices.
Our Child-Friendly Eye Exams
Our optometrists are trained to work with children and ensure that their eye exams are both thorough and enjoyable. We use child-friendly techniques and equipment to assess your child’s vision and eye health. Our exams include:
-
Visual Acuity Testing: Assessing how well your child can see at different distances.
-
Eye Alignment and Movement Tests: Checking for strabismus and other alignment issues.
-
Refraction: Determining the correct prescription for glasses if needed.
-
Eye Health Evaluation: Examining the health of the eyes to detect any conditions or abnormalities.

-
Encourage Good Habits: Teach your child to take care of their eyes by limiting screen time, encouraging outdoor play, and ensuring they wear sunglasses to protect against UV rays.
-
Routine Eye Exams: Keep up with regular eye exams to monitor your child’s vision and eye health.

Choosing your glasses
